El Shaklan

Since the commencement of my info-letters, I had some appeals by the readers who requested research done regarding certain Arabian horses and the most popular request was that of El Shaklan descendants.  Thus I decided to do this one about him.

Being born in 1975 on the 10th of August, El Shaklan was bred by Heinz-Rudiger Merz of Om El Arab stud, in Germany.  He was sired by the Egyptian stallion, Shaker El Masri [Morafic x Zedeba] and bred out of the Spanish-bred mare, Estopa [Tabal x Uyaima].  In his eventful life he sired a total of 864 foals and became the European Champion Junior Male horse in 1977 and that same year he was also awarded the Champion Stallion of Belgium and the British National Reserve Champion stallion.  The next year he became the British Junior National Champion stallion.  Many of his get also acclaimed several championships all over the globe.

*Niyashin El Shaklan

When I extracted a report of his progeny, I subsequently came to the realization that only one direct descendant of El Shaklan was imported to South Africa and he is the multiple Champion stallion, *Niyashin El Shaklan (out of Niharra). *Niyashin El Shaklan was born 18 March 1982 at Om El Arab stud, Germany and was imported in 1982 by the late Mike Krige and his wife, Dilys Krige of Banghor Arabians stud, Klipplaat, Cape province.  He arrived on their farm as 9 month old foal and was the talk of the town at that stage.

When he was old enough, he was bred to several Arabian mares and is still producing quite an astonishing group of Arabian horses for us South Africans.  He was shown at several shows and became the SA National Champion Stallion in 1991 and 1995.  Since his list of descendants are very elongated, I will only mention a very few of his most renowned offspring here.

Banghor Shekina

The first one that comes to my mind is certainly the awe-inspiring mare, Banghor Shekina, who was SA National Supreme Champion Mare several times.  She is bred out of Banghor El Fasha [*Omar El Shaker x Vidiko Fabiola] who was also a grand-daughter of Shaker El Masri through her sire, *Omar El Shaker, making her a double Shaker El Masri bred mare.  In her turn she gave birth to a bouquet of delightful foals, like; Banghor Bint Shekina (sired by *Maistro), Banghor Shaklanzza (sired by *Aurangzzeb) and her full sister Banghor Shazzkita.

Tehama Na Sidaqa

Another daughter of *Niyashin El Shaklan that we needs to commemorate is Banghor Darica who is bred out of the *Barabaz daughter, Banghor Sudonnah.  Banghor Darica is the dam of the SA National Champion stallion, Tehama Na Sidaqa who was also exported to the United Kingdom, where he won several Championships there.  Darica is now residing at the Strydom stud where she plays an active part in their breeding program.

Then there is one of *Niyashin El Shaklan’s offspring that made his mark in the South African breeding business, and he is Banghor Mikalo.  He was bred out of the "Golden-Cross" bred (Spanish/Egyptian/English blood lines) Arab mare, *Mahasin [Ghadames x Muneera], that was also imported by the Kriges in 1982.  Mikalo have a special disposition and became very well-known at several shows for his prominent movement.  He was also presented with heaps of championship awards and he additionally produced a legacy of champions at his current owner’s stud, Mr. Kobus Lombard of Marok Arabians.  His full brother, Banghor El Masri is also a Multi Champion stallion and a sire of National Champion achievers.  He is currently owned by Ilze Beukes of Salvan Arabians where he is producing some beautiful babies for her stud.

Lastly, is the Chestnut gelding, Armika Niyachelle (bred out of Vlinkfontein Rochelle) who was the 1997 SA National Champion Gelding and in 2000 he became the SA National Champion Hunter Pleasure Horse.

With this investigation I can conclude that although it is unfortunate that only one direct son of this majestic and influential sire, El Shaklan, was imported to SA, it was providential that this perceptive importer of *Niyashin El Shaklan made that opportunity happen to the benefit of the Arabian horse breeding history and future of Southern Africa.

Luckily, we are now fortunate enough to have quite a huge collection of El Shaklan descendants present in the South African Arabian breeding scene and with anticipation, through knowledgeable procreation practices, they can produce some amazing Arabian foals for the future.
