The Milordka Family in Poland

emigracjabw.jpg

My next topic was inspired by a fellow breeder who asked me the location of the stallion Emiliusz [Laheeb x Emocja].  He said that he had his eye on this particular stallion for a time now and recently learned that the stallion was bought by the South African Arabian horse breeder, Liezl Els of Agmal Arabians.  Because this particular stallion’s dam is a descendant of the Milordka family in Poland, I was enthused to write more regarding these noble-bred bloodlines.

Almost one half of all the female Arabian horses bred in Poland between 1790 and 1987 started with four Arab mares.  That is Gazella OA, Mlecha OA, Sahara OA and Milordka.  The latter we nowadays know as the E-line at the Michalow state stud in Poland.   It is correct that the pedigrees of these Arabians horses are for us unfamiliar but it doesn’t indicate that they are impure Arabian horses.  The reality is that the pedigrees of Milordka (1816) and the other 3 foundation mares have been lost, probably swept away in the upsurge of devastation, during the course of that distressing period, which has been a constant lot for all the Polish studs.

Obtainable portrayals of the horses they bred put emphasis on the oriental features of these well-known individuals and certainly the originators of the Michalow state stud, which were at that time the patrician Sanguszko, saw no motivation to eradicate the descendants of Milordka and the other foundation broodmares.  On the contrary the extent they went to maintain these mare families were profound and they also only bred them to imported desert-bred stallions from Arabia, to ensure eternalness of these bloodlines. Because of the tasks these mares had to perform daily, since they were used as transport and working animals by the Sanguzskos in the early 1800, the Sanguzskos had their broodmares covered only every second year.  These men were known for their knowledge of an Arabian horse and conducted a thorough culling practice.  They selected only the very best individuals, simply because in those days, having substandard horses got them nowhere other than in an early grave.  Consequently the genetic foundation of the present Polish Arabian horse was established and was done in a tradition of Arab horse breeding that started more than 200 years ago.

The Foundation mare of the E-line, Estokada

That led us to the prevailing E-line dynasty that was established with the combination of the primal great-great-great granddaughter of Milordka, Saga [Hardy x Jaga II] with the stallion Amurath Sahib [Amurath 2 x Sahiba]. Together they produced the E-line foundation chestnut mare Estokada in 1951.  This sizeable and correct mare of utmost excellence, exhibit natural athleticism and striking physical type, gorgeousness and elegance, characteristics for which her much illustrious descendants are admired for all over the world.  Amid her offspring were Esterka [by Anarchista], Eter [by Comet] and the precious Comet daughter Estonia.   However Estokada gave her best daughters with Naborr [Negatiw x Lagodna] which were the European Champion mare, Estebna, the Canadian English pleasure Champion mare, Edycja and the National reserve Champion mare, Eskapada (who earned this title at the tender age of 21 years). The Supreme Champion mare that same year was Eskapada’s own daughter Ekstaza by Celebes [Witraz x Canaria].  The list of champion descendants from Estokada is presently elongated and they’re distributed all over the globe

Currently we here in South Africa are fortunate enough to have only a few of the descendants of the Milordka family, imported by skilled local Arabian horse breeders to complement their existing breeding stock.  They are the imported mares *Eloida [Laheeb x Ekspedycja] and *Eligia [Sanadik El Shaklan x Escalona] bred at Michalow stud – Poland and imported to South Africa by Dr Vander Westhuizen of Azrek Arabians.  Champion mare, *Eloida‘s sire is the Egyptian stallion Laheeb [Imperial Imdal x AK Latifa] who were used extensively by Michalow stud in the 1999 breeding season on their lovely broodmares.  He is currently standing at Michalow stud again for the 2008 season and they also used the Golden Cross stallion, Sanadik El Shaklan [El Shaklan x Mohena].

Additionally there are the mares imported by Tinus & Francisca Strydom of the Strydom stud.  They are the chestnut mare, *Emisana [Wojslaw x Estepona] and the beautiful grey mare, *Esina [Sinus x Estancja]. The latter mare, Esina’s sire is also an Egyptian stallion used by Michalow stud on their existing broodmare band.  *Esina was imported in foal to the Champion stallion Ekstern [Monogramm x Ernestyna] and recently gave birth to her filly foal, FS Euphoria, while *Emisana was imported in foal to the Egyptian stallion, Al Maraam [Imperial Imdal x The Vision HG] and produced her colt foal here, called FS Emporer.

Emiliuzs

Then there is the stallion who inspired this info-letter, Emiliusz [Laheeb x Emocja] born in 2000, bred at Michalow stud and also sired by the Egyptian stallion, Laheeb.  Emiliusz also was a 2003 Race winner in Poland, a Tulip Cup Reserve Champion stallion in 2006 and the 2007 Swedish National Champion Stallion.  This stallion was according to Ariela Arabians in Isreal, sold to Liezl Els, wife of the famed Ernie Els, of Agmal Arabians, South Africa.  Unfortunately Emiliusz will not come to South Africa in the near future, but will remain in Europe at Johanna Ultrom’s  European horse Training centre.

With all these recently imports from Poland we are also now at the verge of a new era in our breeding stage here in Southern Africa and we also hope that Mrs. Els will in the future decide to import some of this magnificent stallion’s progeny to our country, so that we can appreciate his ornate bloodlines.
