On a recent visit to an Arab stud in our vicinity, the stable manager there showed me
thee most fine-looking and gorgeous filly foal that has arrived for their owners the past breeding season. She also told me the parentage of this exquisite little filly, and I was surprised at the result. This little filly’s dam line is out of our old Dawn Shadow-bloodlines, combined
with “new” Padron’s Psyche bloodlines in her sire-lines, together with the legendary stallion, Magic Dream
CAHR [Ali Jamaal x The DreamSpinner] who is also on his way to South Africa in the near future, also present in her dam’s bloodlines. At first glance this linage was a total out-cross, and what a perfect
match too!!! I took some pictures of my own and went home to look at her extended
pedigree on “Wijost Horse Program”. Subsequently I found what the
actual connection of her gorgeousness was in her astonishing pedigree.
I discovered that her tail
female line leads back to the exquisite Champion Arab mare, Hammad Jasmeyn [*Sabdan x Nourmahal Fasti] and Hammad Jasmeyn
is the Grand-daughter of the imported mare, *Dawn Shadow [Radi x Pale Shadow]. I
subsequently also remembered what Mr. Billy Van Gemert, of Hammad stud informed us years ago, regarding the association, Dawn
Shadow [Radi x Pale Shadow] and Padron’s, Grand sire, Bright Shadow [Radi x Pale Shadow] had. They were full brother and sister and both produced some astonishing offspring. By the way, Bright Shadow is also the Grand Sire of the notable grey stallion, *Silvern Gleam [Bright Crown
x Silvern Dream] that was imported to South Africa by El-Jamani stud. Padron [Patron x Odessa] being this filly’s primal great-grand Sire through Padron’s Psyche, was himself an awe-inspiring and
eye-catching stallion too and he is being represented twice in her sire’s bloodlines.
The fine-looking imported mare, *Dawn Shadow was born in 1949, sired by Radi [Rishan x Razina]
and bred by Mrs. Mounsey-Heysham, Cumberland, Great Brittian. Except for Skowronek
being spotted once in the 5th Generation of her pedigree, this mare would have been of true Asil lineage. As a six year old mare, *Dawn Shadow was imported to South Africa by Mr. H.R. Fletcher of Robdon Arabians, in Elliot,
Cape Province South Africa where she had 4 offspring.
They were;
Robdon Red
Demon - Male, born 1955/05/30, sired by Blue Domino (Imported in Uterus)
Robdon Dancing Shadow - Female, born 1957/12/04, sired by *Dancing Wings [Dargee x Shades of Night]
Robdon Dusty Dawn - Female, born 1961/12/01, sired by Robdon Desert Dust [Count Dorsaz x *Yasimet] Robdon Desert Shadow - Male, born 1962/11/09,
sired by Robdon Zingari [*Zahir x *Yasimet]
10 Years later Mr. F.C.C. & Mrs. A.R. Weilbach of Nourmahal stud, in Heilbron, Freestate province, bought *Dawn Shadow and she had 4 filly foals in a row at her new owners, which were;
Nourmahal Khaybet - female, born 1965/11/07, sired by Robdon Desert Dust [Count Dorsaz x *Yasimet]
Nourmahal Kheta - female, born 1966/10/18, sired by Reibara Raktha’s Souvenir [*Raktha x *Silsilla]
Nourmahal Fasti - female, born 1967/10/13, sired by Reibara Raktha’s Souvenir [*Raktha x *Silsilla] Nourmahal Dawn’s Yana - female, born 1968/10/18, sired by Quimran Sorrento [*Quantock 2 x *Indian Glory]
Subsequently her son, Queensway Shadow Play, made quite an impression on Mr. F.C.C. &
Mrs. A.R. Weilbach of Nourmahal stud and they bought him, and bred him to their existing broodmares, including his sisters. His most eminent descendant being the stallion, Nourmahal Mustapha [out of Timarie
Lady Mae], who was acquired by Mrs Ethelwyn De Vos of the Malperthuis stud and she rode him at the National Endurance ride
in 1982, coming in first place. Queensway Shadow Play himself sired 62 offspring
(32 –male & 30 female), and the majority of them were of the highest quality. *Dawn Shadow’s 4 daughters born at the Nourmahal stud produced quite an impressive
group of champion descendants, too. I will only mention a few, since Nourmahal
Khaybet gave birth to eleven and her half-sister, Nourmahal Kheta gave birth to seventeen superb offspring in their lifetimes,
making it unreasonable to mention them all.
To name some, Nourmahal Khaybet gave birth to Nourmahal Vanessa, who was sired by, Queensway Shadow Play, making Vanessa
a double *Dawn Shadow-bred mare. Nourmahal Vanessa produced exquisite reputable
offspring like; - Whitehouse Ghazali,
mare, sired by *Ashar; Whitehouse Hafez, stallion, sired by *Anchor Hill
Omar; Sadat Omar, stallion, sired by *Anchor Hill
Omar; Sadat Ibn Gamil Grey, stallion, sired by Vidiko Gamil
Grey; Sadat Bint Vanessa, mare, sired by *Darius; Sadat Fantazia, mare, sired by *Darius; Vidiko Imshi, mare, sired by *Darius; Sadat Dayyan, stallion, sired by *Darius; Sadat Ishar, stallion, sired by *Darius; and Vidiko Dari, mare, sired by *Darius.
Given that Nourmahal Kheta produced seventeen offspring, I am only going to mention
a few here, like her daughter, Nourmahal Tareek, born in 1975, sired by Queensway Shadow Play.
Tareek was also the dam of the renown *Sabdan son, Mushanige Ibn Sabdan, and Nourmahal Kheta also gave birth
to his three-quarter sister, Bel-Ami Simoné.
Nourmahal Tareek also produced the Egyptian-related stallion, Mushanige Tuvia Raviv,
sired by *Galeeh, bred by Mrs Charmain Oosthuizen of Mushanige stud in Krugersdorp. Another *Sabdan son out of Nourmahal Kheta, Mushanige El Shazli was entered into several
endurance rides, with more than a 1000 kilometers, completed successfully, behind him.
Nourmahal Alyf, sired by *SAF Firstaar, was also one of Nourmahal Kheta’s offspring and he was a multiple Champion stallion, such as the Vaal
show Senior Champion stallion in 1986.
Nourmahal Fasti was sold to Mr. Billy Van Gemert of Hammad Arabians as a six month old filly and she grew into a particularly
attractive creature, becoming the Supreme Champion mare at the Northern Championships in 1974.
Unfortunately she only produced six offspring, and the most renowned of them being Hammad Jasmeyn and Simadelin Faydel. The latter, was sired by the Babson-bred stallion, *Anchor Hill Omar and Simadelin
Faydel produced lovely descendants for Dr. Ingrid Dannheimer of Danven Arabians, in Pretoria. She was also awarded quite a lot of championships under saddle at various
shows. Hammad Jasmeyn her self was the Senior Champion mare at Pretoria show in 1986 and most of her get were also awarded many championship honors.
Minhab Ky Halluj [*Kyala x Hammad Jasmeyn] was a very handsome stallion and won several halter classes at a number of shows. He also became the 1992 Supreme Champion stallion at the Rand Show and was awarded
the Pretoria Reserve Champion Costume riding horse in 1996 and he won his Novice Utility Riding horse class at the SA Nationals
that same year. Both his 2 full sisters, Minhab Ky Al-Sharaa and Minhab Ky Noor
were champions too and produced some exquisite descendants, the latter being the grand dam of the amazing filly that I set
my eyes on recently.
Another correlation that I could find in this remarkable pedigree was that the Sire of the
superb filly’s dam-line traces back to the multiple champion mare, Sanacht [Hadban Enzahi x Hathor]. Sanacht was bred at Wurttemburg stud, Germany and in 1962 she was exported to Paul & Sandra Loeber’s
Arabian stud in Illinois, USA, where Sanacht produced 12 Champion offspring and two of her daughters produced at least 8 champions
respectively. Her sire was the Marbach/Weil bred Egyptian Nazeer son, Hadban
Enzahi and she was bred out of the Polish/Egyptian bred Arab mare, Hathor [Halef x Jatta].
This exceptional mare is the blood sister to the imported stallion, *Sabdan [Hadban Enzahi x Haita], who is also the
sire of the lovely mare, Hammad Jasmeyn.
In conclusion:
For no less than 5 centuries, mankind found pleasure in breeding Arabian horses.
Conversely, when one evaluates the breeding methods of all successful Arabian horse breeders, one can come to more
that one conclusion. That is; - Is there an amount of speculation involved, or is there an intuition that successful
breeders, past and present, follow when they’re opt for specific bloodline merges?
The reality is that as a breeder of Arabian horses that originated in ancient times, one has to be aware of the existence
and impact their heritable background has. Genetics in an Arab horse’s
bloodlines hold every individual’s characteristics and this is why an individual Arabian horse’s “genetic
makeup” cannot be fully evaluated from his external appearance only. Genetic
qualities, favorable and/or unfavorable, could not constantly be recognized or externally detectable when viewing the horse
itself. Hence, by implementing remedial line-breeding into one’s breeding
program, one can narrow down these traits that are within the bloodlines, and endeavor to bring forth only the desired qualities
of that lineages.
Some Arabian horses have been the originators of a certain “breeding lines” and being extremely evident
and pre-potent in their future descendants. This was accomplished by imprinting
their pre-eminent characteristics on to their offspring and on all their further descendants.
By being knowledgeable of the Arabian horse’s ancestry, one can establish a proper breeding strategy. Always bear in mind, that breeding Arabian horses is a fine art and cannot be strict scientific.
